Apollo Cancer Institute

Apollo Cancer Institute in Indraprastha Apollo hospital, Sarita Vihar, New Delhi includes Surgical, Medical and Radiation Oncology Department.

The Radiation Oncology/Radiotherapy department at Indraprastha Apollo hospital, Sarita Vihar, New Delhi has more than twelve years of experience in delivering the advanced Radiotherapy treatments to thousands of patients. The department at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital is equipped with two state-of-the-art Medical Linear accelerators for radiotherapy and used by most experienced team of experts.

This department uses advanced treatment planning technology which helps our experienced Radiation Oncologists to treat tumors effectively while minimizing/no side effects due to radiation treatment.

Linear Accelerators

Varian’s CLINAC 21EX
Varian’s CLINAC 21EX is a dual photon energy (6MV & 15MV) machine with five different electron energies and capable of delivering dynamic Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). It includes the latest Amorphous Silicon 1000 for a best available “On-Line” verification of radiotherapy images just before delivering the radiation treatment. It helps in viewing the images of area receiving radiotherapy and compare with the intended planned images. In other words it ensures the accuracy of the treatment. This machine used for different sites of the body.

Varian’s CLINAC 600 SR/CD
Varian’s CLINAC 600 SR/CD first in Southeast Asia and upgraded to have latest microMLC for the range of tumour shapes and sizes. It is dedicated for all type of brain cases, small lesions in Head & Neck region, etc. It is capable of delivering Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) and dynamic IMRT/IMRS. The selection of technique depends on diagnosis and involvement of critical areas or structures.

Patient Preparation for Radiotherapy
The department has mould room facility to prepare the patient with various types of best immobilization devices before proceeding for CT simulation. Each patient undergoes CT scan procedures with immobilization devices to get the complete patient data. This provides scanned images of relevant region and patient’s body contour. It helps Doctors to contour or draw the tumour as well as normal/critical structures. Patient’s MRI information is used for all the brain and required cases. MRI images are fused to the same patient’s CT images and treatment planning is done.
The patient’s body information/patient data in form of CT images and MRI images are used for treatment planning. The Treatment planning systems available in the department are the latest versions of Eclipse and BrainScan.

Treatment techniques available
  1. Conventional radiotherapy.
  2. Three Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3DCRT).
  3. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  4. Stereotactic Radiotherapy/IMRT and Stereotactic Radiosurgery /IMRS
  5. Radiotherapy using electrons
  6. Total Skin Electron Therapy (used for cases like mycosis fungoides, etc.)
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
This technique involves multiple radiation beams directed on the tumor itself. The intensity of beam varies to deliver highest possible doses to destroy tumour. Special planning software and algorithms are used to achieve the IMRT plans. The IMRT treatment is delivered only after the quality check of individual patient’s plan. Body equivalent phantom along with dosimetry system is used to measure and compare the radiation delivered and intended planned before starting the treatment.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery
Stereotactic radiosurgery involves a single, high-dose application of radiation to the tumor. Radiation beams are precisely aimed to converge upon a small tumor. The treatment couch is rotated to deliver maximum radiation dose to target without harming surrounding tissues. This technique is used to treat benign tumours, Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM), cavernous angiomas certain functional brain disorders and certain cancerous lesions.
Stereotactic Intensity modulation (IMRS) techniques are implemented whenever needed.

Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT)
Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) delivered in many small doses that means treatment delivered in multiple days or it is fractionated therapy. Patients receiving such treatments include those with brain tumors and head & neck regions. Stereotactic Intensity modulation techniques are implemented whenever needed.

Quality Assurance Programme
The quality assurance programme is carried out by the experienced and qualified experts to ensure the quality of the treatment.
