Indraprastha Apollo hospital attended to about 23,000 (Inpatients) and
80,000 (Outpatients) during the year 2000. The hospital being a premier
tertiary care hospital of India attract patients from all over the globe.
Many critically ill patients land up into the hospital from far off places.
The department of Transfusion Medicine provides blood support to theses
patients. While the National average blood consumption per bed is 7 units
per annum that of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital is approx. 6.5 units per bed
year.
The department collect blood from Voluntary and Replacement (Relative and
friends of patients) blood donor only. The hospital does not pay any blood
donors nor does it sell any blood or blood products.
Strict donor selection criteria are followed by hospital to ensure good
health to the donor and good quality blood products. GMP (good manufacturing
practices) and Drug law are strictly adhered to , to ensure quality in all
facets of Transfusion services.

Although all necessary precaution are taken to ensure safest possible blood
for the patients, yet as would be true any where else in the world we do not
offer any "Zero Risk Blood". The department tests blood for
Hepatitis B Core Antibodies in addition to the legally mandatory tests to
minimize the risk of post transfusion Hepatitis B (PTHB).
Our is also a certified center for carrying out test for diagnosis of HIV
infections in normal and patient population (Elisa and western Blot Test).
Optimal patient care is assured by , maintaining a healthy inventory of
blood components to ensure blood support in emergencies. The department has
adopted Leucoreduction technology (Opti) from Baxter to provide Leucoreduced
Red Cells.
The hospital has an active Apheresis unit and runs round the clock
facilities for Platelet Apheresis, Plasma aphresis, Granulocyte/ Lymphocyte
Harvesting and Blood and Plasma Exchange. Lives of more than 40 critically
ill patient have been saved by the institution of timely and aggressive
therapeutic plasma exchange rendered by the Apheresis unit of the
Department.
